Looking For Animals in (california theme parks) Antarctica

By Potters Euge

You’d be surprised that the farthest southern living animal is actually a pink mite. This tiny creature is only 1/100th of an inch long. Looking very similar to a spider, it dines on algae and fungi. One scientist from Hawaii was able to find the pink mite within 309 miles of the South Pole. This same scientist found lichens growing 266 miles from the Pole, which is the nearest any living thing has ever been found.

Insects and their family are the only animals that can stay on Antarctica all year long. A recent magazine article reported this. To find the over 56 species of arthropods that live on Antarctica, you’ll need some kind of magnification. One insect you could easily see is about the size of a common horsefly. It’s a wingless fly. Their lives are paused until the air temperatures reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the freezing point of water, and they resume their daily activities.

The waters surrounding the continent are starkly different than the land. They are bustling with life from microscopic shrimp to the blue whale, which is the largest living being on the planet. Marine life was observed by scientists recently using a small steel capsule designed for observation and recording data. Spying out into the water through the six available windows, the scientists took turns being submerged. They even utilized a hydrophone to listen into the sea life.

Though there weren’t a lot of fish to be seen, there was a jelly fish that sported tentacles of up to thirty feet in length. Seals were constantly surrounding the chamber. They were very curious about it. The hydrophone picked up all the chirping and whistling that seals typically make when communicating. One scientist said he’d never heard such noise before.

Without these sounds, Weddell seals may be unable to get around in the dark waters, or to communicate with each other. The navigation theory makes a lot of sense when you consider finding food and air in the darkness of the Antarctic. Analysis of the seal sounds is being performed in the Antarctic. Because they are outside our hearing range, some of the sounds can’t be detected by humans.

Scientists don’t know yet how the Weddell seals make the sounds. Both their nostrils and mouths are tightly closed when in the water. There have been recorded dives by these seals that have been as deep as 1500 feet, which is the deepest any mammal has ever gone. One seal was able to stay submerged for over 28 minutes. This is also a record. One zoologist was lucky enough to get a sample of a mother seal’s milk. Seal milk has a much higher fat ratio than human milk does. This is one of the reasons that baby seals can gain weight more quickly than any other mammal. In just six weeks time, a seal pup can increase its weight by five times.

Scientists have investigated Antarctic seas wearing special frogman dive suits. Colorful seaweeds, including red ones, filled the ocean’s bottom. In addition to this, scientists found red and white star fish species, five-foot-long worms, and sponges that measured four feet in diameter.
