By Patrick Cortis
The Vodafone Malta Foundation has supported the MCAST Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and the Institute of Information and Communication Technology for the purchase of educational material. The material, including books, journals and software training packages, is required to improve the type and quality of the courses in communications offered to students and to keep MCAST staff updated in this fast changing field. The material will be used by students at all levels but more particularly those following the newly launched degree programmes at the above-mentioned Institutes.
We are proud to have our name down as contributors to this fine institution and we feel it is our duty to support such entities in order to enhance educational programs for the benefits of our youths. Education has come a long way and todays young people are spoilt for choice with the variety of subjects to pursue. said Mrs Gemma Mifsud Bonnici, Chairperson of the Vodafone Malta Foundation.
Prof. Maurice Grech, MCAST Principal and CEO, said: MCAST mission statement is to provide universally accessible vocational and professional education and training with an international dimension responsive to the needs of the individual and the economy. We interpret this donation as recognition to MCASTs delivery and commitment and a sign of confidence, appreciation and support by the Vodafone Foundation.

The Death of The Crocodile Hunter - Steve Irwin
By Buddy Smith
Steve Irwin is an Australian television personality. But more than that, he is a wildlife expert and a conservationist. He is working on the proper care of the natural environment, especially of the animals. He is called The Crocodile Hunter because of his show, with the same title. It is an international wildlife documentary series hosted by him and his wife, Terri Irwin. But too sad for all the crocodiles, the nature, his family and friends, the entire Australian nation and the whole world, Steve was killed.
The crocodile hunter fatally died while filming another wildlife documentary in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. A stingray stabbed him on the chest while snorkeling at the Batt Reef. He had accidentally boxed the animal which caused it to panic and barb its tail. Not too long, Steve was not breathing anymore and announced dead. The incident was caught on the camera by Steve’s cameraman. The Queensland police said that it is stingray’s instinct to defend after Steve getting to close to the marine animal. Interestingly, the documents’ supposed title was Ocean’s Deadliest, and the Crocodile Hunter met one of them. It cost his dear life. It cost the worldwide mourning and grievances. It is an accident that nobody expect. The legendary Steve Irwin put his life at stake and let us see how nature is gonna get back what we take from them.
After a week of Steve Irwin’s death, several stingrays were fund dead and mutilated on the beaches of Queensland. Authorities suppose that this was done by Irwin’s fans as an act of revenge. But people close to the late naturalist insist that Steve Irwin, even if he’s already dead, would never allow this thing.
For a couple of weeks, the whole country was so gloomy, in sympathy to the death of an icon. Australia was in a week-long shock and distress because of Steve Irwin’s death. The only positive thought was that he died where he want to. This death is by nature and for nature. An ideal death for a wildlife advocate. On all forms of media, radio, TV, newspaper and internet, the hottest topic is about the Crocodile Hunter’s fatal death. Even the international scene showed their compassion to this tragic event by making memorials and tribute to Australia’s greatest son. The Animal Planet in America renamed the Discovery’s world headquarters in Silver Spring, Montgomery County, Maryland, U.S., to the “Steve Irwin Memorial Sensory Garden”. The TV show also aired The Crocodile Hunter Diaries marathon to pay tribute to Irwin. In India, A crocodile research centre in Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary was named by the Kerala government after Steve Irwin. It is now called the Steve Irwin Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research Centre.
This death by Steve Irwin is a lesson for all of Australian abusing nature. A warning to those who have an Australia visa planning to visit the beauty of Australia’s wildlife. Most of all, this is Steve’s message to the whole world. All he want to say is that nature is naturally stronger than us. There is no way that we can beat them forever. There is a time for a setback on human. And that time is has long been started.
