Though there weren’t a lot of fish to be seen, there was a jelly fish that sported tentacles of up to thirty feet in length. Seals were constantly surrounding the chamber. They were very curious about it. The hydrophone picked up all the chirping and whistling that seals typically make when communicating. One scientist said he’d never heard such noise before.

Without these sounds, Weddell seals may be unable to get around in the dark waters, or to communicate with each other.
